Motorized, mechanical and hydraulic equipment have historically depended on mineral oil-based lubricants and fluids to prevent wear, reduce friction, protect against oxidation and provide smooth, long lasting operation.  A growing body of evidence now suggests that synthetic oils, hydraulic fluids and greases offer significant advantages over mineral-based products -- including measurable cost advantages.  The reason?  Read on... What are Synthetic Lubricants? A synthetic lubricant is a product made from a chemical reaction of two or more simpler chemical compounds, which is then "engineered" with the necessary performance additives. The base stocks comprising a synthetic lubricant are tailored through molecular restructuring to meet specific physical and chemical characteristics. There are a number of chemical compounds and elements which comprise the most common synthetics, but instead of a chemistry lesson, the most important points to remember are that they offer the following benefits when compared to "conventional" lubricants: Superior chemical stability for longer useful life. Better low temperature fluidity...which translates to better lubrication (along with easier engine start-ups and smoother equipment operation) in frigid conditions. Advanced high temperature viscosity durability, which means the lubricants won't thin or "break-down" under the heat or high-pressure of extreme service applications. What about cost? The up-front cost of most synthetic lubricants is higher than that of conventional mineral-oil products, so where do the dollar savings show up? Longer drain/relubrication intervals (fewer oil and fluid changes). Extended equipment service life (improved lubrication means less down-time, reduction in equipment break-downs, and enhanced equipment resale value.)
